Cultural Champions 2012

What is the Cultural Champion Scheme?

Liverpool is an inspiring place which is bursting at the seams with world-class galleries, museums, performance venues and heritage sites. This scheme
celebrates and promotes our city’s vibrant cultural life by supporting the Cultural Champions to simply get involved.

The Cultural Champions will enjoy a whirlwind year full of exciting events and new experiences, and the chance to express their own creativity and opinions about Liverpool arts. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to the arts or a seasoned culture-vulture! Nominees just need bags of enthusiasm and an interest in exploring what arts and culture can do for them and the people around them.

  • Attend and participate in cultural events and reflect on them in the public domain (For example on a blog, social networks, radio etc)
  • Actively promote arts and culture to other people (e.g. friends, family, colleagues, neighbours etc) and encourage engagement, especially from those who don’t ordinarily participate in cultural activities
  • Work with mentors and partner arts organisations, to develop a ‘big idea’ or theme which can be explored and developed into a policy idea, event or project (if they choose to)
  • Strengthen the links between Culture Liverpool, the city’s cultural organisations and cultural activities taking place in and with Liverpool communities
  • Take part in an evaluation study into the impacts of arts & culture on individuals, particularly around wellbeing

What do the past Cultural Champions say?

“Being a Cultural Champion has taken me on a journey of great discovery, I not only rediscovered my great city, the people and the passion, I discovered my love of art, something I didn’t know I cared about. I feel very privileged to have had this wonderful opportunity” Donna Williamson

“I have enjoyed every minute of being a cultural champion, and have gained new friends, new skills and learned even more about the city I love. I think that any person interested in people, community, and the arts, who can give time and passion to the role would have a year to remember for the rest of their lives. I don’t think I could single out one specific event, I recommend everyone to have a go – nominate – and make it happen. It could change your life for the better” Barbara McGrouther

“I have had an opportunity to experience such a wide variety of events within our city. This has affirmed what a culturally diverse and exciting place to live, work and play Liverpool is. The process of cultural engagement has greatly improved my sense of wellbeing. Being part of a wider cultural community has helped me see the world and my city in a different way and has opened my eyes to whatculture can do for the individual and communities. Lastly, but by no means leastly, the role of culture champ has helped me, and I think the blog’s readers, affirm the identity of what being a Liverpudlian is. Someone who sees the world through the eyes of an artist” Paul Argent
