People of Oxton

People of Oxton: Photographs by James Deegan, opens 9 May

Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, Slatey Road, Birkenhead, CH43 4UE

9th May – 24th June 2018.  Open Wednesday-Sunday 10am-5pm.

Following his recent exhibition ‘People of the Williamson’, photographer James Deegan returns to the Williamson with a fresh look at the faces of the nearby Oxton Village.

Over the last six months James has photographed over a 100 different people who live, work or have a strong connection to the area. All of the images were taken in Oxton locations special to the subject – such as the home, garden, favourite spot or place of work. These ‘environmental portraits’ are intended to reveal something about the character of the people, as well as of the area itself.

The portraits will go on show at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum in May, to coincide with the ‘Secret Gardens of Oxton’ event. There will also be a booklet to accompany the exhibition with the portraits accompanied by quotes and stories from the people involved. This time capsule, the images and words of local people, is intended as a unique and intimate snapshot of Oxton in 2018.
