Seeing Beckett – A call for Images. Deadline 24th July.
This is a call to image-makers, artists, designers, illustrators and photographers.
The idea of this exhibition is to visualise the sensation and affect of an encounter with Samuel Beckett’s work in film, performance or text, rather than with a literal representation of the characters. In order to realise this exhibition we are calling for images of artistic and / or applied visual research practice that engage with Beckett’s drama, prose, letters, critical writing and / or poetry in some way. We are open to all kinds of creative works that meet this criterion. The makers of the visual works are at liberty to present their own individual and personal take on any of the texts and the original work can be in any media, including three-dimensional, performance and film-based works. Experimental projects / works in progress and / or existing works that have been re-imagined for this context are also welcome. Series of work can include but are by no means limited to the following:
Typographic responses to dialogue
Drawing related to time and duration
Photographs of nothing happening (Where nothing happens, twice)
Still images in response to film / play / prose / poetry
Photographic documentation of movement
Visualising writing, legibility, text and affect.
Drawing sequence related to stillness
Printmaking and / or publication / ‘zine / graphic novel / sequential practice.
Illustrating performance of aging, failure, decrepitude and silence
Images of absence, the uncanny, repetition, non-linearity, interruption and habit.
The call asks that contributors initially submit a series of up to eight images of work, sent initially as a lo-res PDF. These images can be the works themselves, or they can be images that document other forms of practice. An abstract / statement of no more than 300 words along with brief biographical information of no more than 150 words will also be required. Selected applicants will then be asked to send a series of higher resolution images for printing in a standard format no bigger than A3. The exhibition will consist of prints from these files, along with the abstract / statement. We will try to accommodate particular arrangement requirements for the images.
